This design had some particular challenges including craning a number of tonnes of top soil onto the roof terrace, along with getting all of the plants and materials up too. Originally planted by architects with long box hedges which had died, we replaced everything to create a soft, colourful and diverse range of tough plant species. These are low maintenance and very beautiful, capable of withstanding full sun, drought and strong winds which such an exposed space will have to weather. I love the airy textures and colours alongside the clean lines of raised beds and seating.
I’m sure people make much more use of that space now – it looks an inviting space to sit and watch the flowers grow.
