Today I planted 50 x Galanthus nivalis (snowdrop) bulbs and 9 x Fritillaria meleagris ‘Alba’ bulbs. I followed the advice in the book Succession Planting for Adventurous Gardeners by plonking the bulbs around the base of shrubs. In the above photo, you can see the Galanthus buried 8cm deep, 10cm apart around the base of our Buddleja davidii ‘Santana’.
I know I’ve gone against the better wisdom of planting the snowdrops in the green, but I’m impatient and thought bulbs from a good supplier (Anglia Bulbs) were worth a shot. Plus I’ve had luck with snowdrop bulbs flowering in the past. I spread the 50 bulbs in little clumps across the main bed in spots I’m unlikely to disturb in summer. I.e. mainly around the base of shrubs or right next to walls.
The Fritillaria were planted in the same way in the sunnier spot beneath the Sambucus nigra ‘Black Lace’. The hope is that both the Galanthus and Fritillaria will self seed and build stronger clumps in future years. Exciting stuff!
Now I just need to decide where the Allium ‘Purple Sensation’ and Tulip ‘Green Star’ are to go.
